I have the same fiver. I pull it with a 350 diesel. While it is lighter than a lot of other fifth wheels, I can't imagine pulling it with a 1/2 ton, let alone a gas engine. I'm sure there are capable gas engines, but the scenario you describe is exactly what diesels are for.
