Do yourself a favor and test drive a diesel while your at the dealership. I pulled my 5vr for two years with my half ton ram, did fine but could have been better. There is no doubt the new larger gas motors in the 3/4 ton trucks are more than capable of doing the job, but you will thank yourself over and over again for buying the diesel. My 14 cummins is averaging 18.5 mpg daily driving compared to 12.5 in my half ton and actually pulling the camper is a joy. Don't even know its hooked up! On a side note, my camper weighs in around 10k loaded and has a dry pin weight of 1100lbs. I avoided any trips to the mountains with my old truck on purpose, did fine on the flat roads on the east coast, no way I would go where you did!
