My wife had never driven anything bigger than a 1/2T PU when we went shopping. When we saw our current PU the dealer asked about a test drive (it was on the showroom floor) and I said sure and told my wife she was driving. As expected she was more than a little nervous about driving it. About a 10 mile jaunt and she was in love. She would rather drive it than her Expedition. She has no problem pulling our trailer and does a great job. I just can't talk her into backing it. When it's hookup time she's the driver, she can dead center the hitch every time.
We live in the country so there are no short jaunts but my procedure is to let it warm up until the transmission cooler is off the peg and then take it easy. Even then it takes abt 5 mi to warm up. If towing I let it warm up until the engine temp is normal.
Our truck gets around 16-18 in our normal driving patterns (not towing), her expedition is about the same.
Long story short, go for the diesel and let your other half blow the soot out once or twice a week. When you hook up to the trailer you just won't believe the difference.
