You are correct. You do not need on board air.
Sounds to me like on board air is something you would want to have to add and remove air for ease of hitching.
I don't see how it is as easy as a Companion to remove.
We carry a hand held air compressor but have not had to use it during trips, first of the season only. The BD3 comes apart in 3 pieces for easier handling.
