In researching these I'm finding basic plastic ones for $20/side up to elaborate metal clamping ones for $50+/side. Do the cheapies work just as well? I'm not opposed to spending the $$ if I need to...

IF, you can find any used, Rotochok are the best thing. Not cheap, but the best.
With them installed, if you forget to take them off before pulling the trailer out, you won't pull the trailer out.
But they went out of business, when both of the couple that founded and made them passed away. I saw a company that was trying to collect and resell used ones, but I can't come up with it now.
