Which is best for pulling a fifth wheel, short or long box?

For pulling, the long box without question. Short box works, but is a compromise with non-towing uses.

More importantly, for a 37' fiver, you will want to consider a dually, and as far as I know, they are currently only offered with a long box. When you do the math on the load capacity you need, the box length decision may be made for you.

Which cab?
I would suggest an extended or quad cab with a short box.
This will enable you to carry passengers.
The short box will or you should have a slider style hitch.

Your choice. I use a short box with an autoslider hitch. I wouldn't chance using a short bed without an autoslide. Too easy to damage your truck. If you are going to be traveling a lot, I would probably just do the long bed. I like my short bed, but my next truck will probably be a long bed so I can get a hitch I can remove by myself. My autoslider takes 2 people to load or unload.

Either one is good. Check into a good slider hitch if going with a short box. I chose the short box, and have a pullrite auto slide and like it a lot. My reason for the short box was partly in the trucks wheel base, figuring there would be better manuvering in camp grounds. I believe you get a better ride with the longer wheel base, but I have no complaints with mine.

Another point is that a long box (almost) always has a more comfortable ride (towing or solo) due to the longer wheelbase.

(I say almost, because somebody who has modified the OEM suspension or added air-bags or something will come in and be willing to argue with a fence post about ride comfort.)

What weight 5th wheel........that is more important on truck choice then length

If you read his original post you will see he's talking going full time for at least a few years------ 37 foot fifth wheel ,that's going to put you in the twelve to fifteen thousand pound range.(or MORE).

Okay--- so that question was answered if you read it.:S

Long wheelbase is going to give you a much better ride ,and more capability of carrying extra stuff---(in the bed ).. if you're going full time ----you say you are..:W

If not worried about fitting into a garage then go with the long bed. It is still personal choice!!!

Another thing to consider is that a long bed usually accommodates a larger fuel tank, which is handy when traveling! I love my shortbed, but a 300 mile range is on the low side for any distances.
