Which tires

What are your thoughts about the following ST tires.

Hercules load range D
Task Master load range D
Carlisle RH load range D
Tow Master load range E
Omni load range E

I am looking to replace the tires on my 2013 Rockwood fifth wheel that had load range C.

Thanks
  • Your trailer came with 15" load range C tires at 50 psi.
When upgrading tires from a 50 psi rated C tire to a load range D requires a rim that can handle 65 psi. Some rims will and some won't so make sure your rims are rated for those pressures.

Same with moving up in tire size. Some 15" sizes of C tires require a 5" wide rim. Moving up in size may take a 6" wide rim.

Many times upgrading tires size and pressure rating requires new wheels. ST tires are good for 3-5 years so I would go with the proven Maxxis ST8008.

The best long term upgrade on your 9350 lb 5th wheel trailer is the LT E at 2680 or 3042 lbs capacity. I run them for 7-10 years depending on which trailer type and 50k-60k miles.
  • 15" or 16" rim???

If they are 15's then I had good luck with e-rated Carlisle's that I just pulled off after 7 years without a hitch. Replaced them with e-rated Maxxis just last week.

If I could have gotten 16" rims for my bolt pattern, I would have gone with light truck tires.

PS I have a TT with a loaded weight of about 9400lbs.
  • Thanks for the replys. I travel about 1500 to 3000 miles a year. What load range? D or E. The fifth wheel has a GVW of 9350 and a pin dry pin of 1500.
  • Another vote for Maxxis ST tires. I ordered mine online as they were not readily available locally. I got the best price (includes free shipping) at DiscountTireDirect.com and they were shipped via UPS to my front door in 3 days. Took them over to our local Discount Tire and had them balanced, installed, and warrantied.
  • Although some of the tires on your list may have the new construction technique that makes them better, none have the track record of Maxxis. If I was going to spend the money I would spend a little extra and get the Maxxis.

How many miles do you tow a year? I wouldn't spend the money for Maxxis if you only go out a few times a year and don't travel very far. If you go out a lot and put a lot of miles a year on then yes Maxxis. ST tires are generally only good for 5-7 yrs depending on what site you read. So if you only put 4-500 miles a year on them then I would look at Goodyear Marathons. Upgrading to a larger higher capacity tire will help you. Most tire issues are from under inflation, heat, driving to fast and overloading.

    None of those.
The only decent ST tire out there is Maxxiss which may have to be ordered but are well worth it.
