I've only had my 5'er for about a week, and towing has been limited to picking up from store, taking to tire shop, and back...each trip consisting of about 25 miles. My TV is a 1996 F350 crew cab long bed 4x4. The GM trucks like yours probably sit about 4"-6" lower than my Ford in stock configuration. What I'm saying is that if you put a 6" lift on your truck, you'd be right up there with me and many other newer model 4x4 trucks. No further comment on that, just want to point it out.
Also, keep in kind that a lift in itself isn't always the problem. Rather, its the 40" mud tires that people put on with it. So instead of a 6" lift, you've got more like a 12" lift. That's a generalization, but you get the point. My buddy has the same year/make/model as you truck with a 8" lift and big tires. I'd say he sits about 4" to 6" higher than my stock height truck.
