I am in the Sac area and my 10 year old son and I usually ride in the Sierra. Most dirt roads in Eldoado are closed right now for winter, but can still ride places like Gold Note, Pipi, etc. Mammoth is great, but its a little haul just for the weekend. We avoid PC unless it is spring time and want to go out for a quick ride. Forget summer riding there in the valley heat.
We are going to check out Mullen Creek about 30 miles north of reno, BLM land, lots of open space and a track. It will be a good place for my boy to ride his pw80 for the first time. Found it on rider planet. What are you pulling up the 50 or 80? Mine is 15k and will be the first trip up the hill loaded. Guessing I'll get 6mpg?
For his first time just go out to PC. Lots of open space and a kiddie track out there he can ride if he feels up to it. You can even take your hauler out there if you like. No sense making a 3.5 hour trip and for him to say after an hour that he has had enough for the day. There is so much good riding within less than 2 hours of your house once he gets on the trails. China Wall and Sugar Pine are just an hour from you. Of course thats woods riding and not everyone is into that.
As far as pulling up 80 and 50 I have never checked. I have a 1 ton dually and just load it up and go. I don't even think of weight. Just for giggles I will get it to the scales pretty soon to see where its at. As far as fuel mileage I never check. It would just make me cry. I just fill it up when it get close to E.
