We struggled with the MH/TT/5th wheel decision and settled on the 5th wheel. We had a pop-up trailer before that, but wanted to do some extensive traveling. The 5th wheel offered:
Cheaper total investment (about$40K for late model used truck, trailer and hitch).
Most stable towing configuration.
Shortest footprint for greatest amount of living space.
Ability to upgrade trailer without having to buy a complete new MH.
Best maneuverability.
I can maintain my truck myself, a MH not so much.
DW likes the "split level" feel of a 5th.
Easier to hitch/unhitch than a TT.
Better MPG than a MH.
Storage, storage, storage.
Stability issue was brought home when we were traveling through Kansas on I70 in a fierce side wind. All the MHs & TTs were pulled off to the side of the road waiting for wind to stop. We didn't have any sway or pitch, just a drop in fuel economy from 11.5MPG to about 8MPG. Only thing I don't like is the height.
