Wind deflectors

This is slightly stealing from the TT section, but was just wondering from those of you who pull using a roof mounted wind deflector on your truck. Do you see any significant gains in fuel mileage?
  • Hey! Mine didn't do squat for gas miles, however it did take out all of the chucking. I leave mine on my truck and just lay it down when not hooked up. Good luck!

I guess it would depend on what you are paying. I made mine out of scrap aluminum and plexi-glass (pic on profile). It cost me less than $50 and installs in about 20 minutes. I'm convinced that the side deflectors help a lot. When I see one of those large flat deflectors mounted on the roof of a long bed p/u and look at the distance back to the fw it just doesn't make sense.
I have a short bed non-sliding hitch with a revolution pin box. The trouble is that its a pain to hitch up with the wedge and I have gone back to using hitch the conventional way. This cuts down on the turning radius and for short trips I have been leaving the deflector off.
All one has to do is look at the front of the fw that is exposed to the wind and you realize that the top is not the only area that is dragging in the wind.

Not only was it no help with MPG, it was UGLY!

Cant disagree with you there. After you figure what it costs to buy how many miles are you going to have to tow to even start to recoop anything?

Yes they work, but only if used correctly. Slowing down 2-3 mph usually nets more fuel savings.

  • Mine is not mounted to the roof, but I usually get about .7 mpg more than traveling without it. When you're getting 9 mpg, it can be significant on a long trip.
  • I have one that you can see in my signature. I have ran it for years because I got it free from my father who went to a Motor home. I took it off for 6 month during this year to do some repairs on it. The only thing I noticed different was the bugs on the front of the trailer when it was off, as far as gas mileage you will not see anything worth the cost of the wing. I get the same mileage with or without it. They are not wide enough or tall enough or close enough to the trailer to work efficiently like the do on tractor trailers.
    just my 2 cents worth.
