Wiring recommendations

I have an older power awning and I am updating the arm on the power side to have the 'release' mechanism. I already replaced the other one so this way I will have both arms that release or 'break away'. Anyway, my question is I have to reroute the power wire that runs up the arm and extend it a little bit. At each end it needs to have a 2 connector 12v plug almost like a trailer connector only with 2 wires. These are easy to find. I am basically making a short extension cord for my awning motor. My question is what wire to use. I need a 2 conductor probably 14 or 16 gauge in a rubberized 'loom'. I am trying to find what specification I need for it since it is outside all of the time. I don't think SJ provides what I am looking for.

Thanks,

Steve
  • What's the amperage of the fuse on the circuit? That will determine the minimum wire size needed. Here's a link to help you decide.
  • I think SJOW will work and is readily available. Any idea what gauge the wire is to the awning motor? Mine is a dometic 9100.

  • SJ isn't what you want. S=Service, J=Junior, typically rated to under 300VAC.
If you're going to use a service type cord, you want something with a "W" in the spec like SJOW since the W means it is weather resistant. I'd email the manufacturer and ask what they use.
