Xlr thunderbolt and srw

Hi all
I own a 2012 srw f350 diesel with 11500 gvw.
Currently tow a 30 foot cougar fifthwheel and behind a flat deck trailer with the boys dirt bikes and genny etc.
Thinking some about toy haulers.
I would like to max around 38 feet. My truck payload is 3412 per door sticker.

I know payload is everything.
Anyone hauling the xlr thunderbolt with newer srw diesels and can comment?
How they handle etc?
Thanks
  • My Pin weight with the trailer ready to camp (linens, cookware, etc ) with NO toys loaded in the back is 3310#. The unit is 16,300# with NO toys loaded in the garage.

I usually keep my tools, compressor, jack (HEAVY 3 ton), and my 2 labs in the bed of the truck adding another 500# or so to my truck. I have a DRW to pull this with, I would recommend you get your truck weighed at a CAT scale and work from there with what you have available for payload.

The XLR is a good trailer and has given me over 15k road miles of use and over 140 nights in the last few years of ownership.

    Good luck -
  • I'm not seeing any squat, but I run firestone bags on mine set at 35 psi. I put them on before I even picked up the trailer, just in case. The other guy on here (screen name: taken) doesn't have bags on his and I think he has very little squat. He ran his over the CAT scale and was at about 2800 on the pin loaded up with an empty garage, which is a lot lighter than many of the Keystone haulers I was also looking at. I measured my trailer last night and came up with 43'9" (give or take). I need to find a cover for it this winter since it won't fit inside where my previous camper was stored. Anyone know if the Adco 34858 cover will fit over this beast? Says up to 43'6" so it may be close??
  • There maybe one or two XLR that once the toys are in the back would not be over your RAWR or GVWR once you load it up and the truck. But most of them from the dry weight sticker I saw where notoriously pin heavy like most toy haulers are. Even with the counter weight of the toys I just don't think you'' be in safe range.
  • Great info guys. Thanks.
I think I read about the guy on the ford forum and XLR. Think he is a moderator????
How much squat are you guys seeing ? What in actual pin weight.
    Beautiful rig!
I even know I can't go that big. Yours must be 42 feet.
With 7500 pounds tire capacity, door rgaw has 7000 pounds, pins over 2800 would be close.
Did either of you have to add bags?
    Thanks
  • Power wise, no sweat.

    You said payload is everything.
I can tell you with a big hauler with slides, you will be over the GVWR of a SRW truck.
  • Which Thunderbolt are you looking at? They are really nice trailers, I just recently picked up a 2016 XLR Thunderbolt 395AMP. It's a little longer than what you said you were looking for, heck, it's longer than what I originally wanted too... I'm towing it with a 2015 F350 SRW and the truck has no problems with it at all. I was really surprised at how well this big trailer tows, it's more stable than my 32' bumper pull camper ever was.

If there's anything specific you'd like to ask, just let me know. There's another guy on here that has the same setup too, he'd be happy to help too, I'm sure. His posts over on the Ford Trucks forum were a contributing factor to me getting this Thunderbolt.

  • Not sure what model your looking at or even if you would want my input as you can see I am over my gvwr, but power wise the truck has zero issues and I have yet to have a so called white knuckle experience! Actually this trailer tows better than my previous 32' travel trailer!
