This subject is always so predictable. The SRW people say the truck pulls just fine & mumble something about the truck being a daily driver along with parking a DRW. The people who have come across to the dark side & bought a DRW swear they are never going back to SRW. Those who have never had a SRW don't know any different & don't want to. They just deal with those extra tires & not being able to put it in the compact car spots.
I agree with your comments except I imagine most DRW people once owned a SRW and understand the heavy towing advantages of the DRW.
I've had both as well and am on my second dually. As long as we are towing a relatively heavy fiver, I will not go back to a SRW. We live in BC where there are extreme mountain passes with curves in every direction and the dually is far superior to the SRW in handling. I also remember checking the tires on my SRW trucks and being concerned about how hot they were when towing; the rear tires on the DRW are nice and cool, even when towing in high temperatures.
With respect to the tires, yes you have 2 additional tires, however they are 17" which are much cheaper than the 18" and 20" tires that are on SRW trucks these days. In addition, the rear tires on a dually when towing a fifth wheel wear at half the rate of those on a SRW so I think the argument of having the expense of 2 additional tires is a bit weak as well.
