Lots of people have done it and are doing it now. Some live in their same town waiting for one or both to retire and others travel for their job. 10 years ago, our youngest was 18 and out of school, so I asked DH (for the umpteenth time) if I could quit my migraine-creating job. He said sure, so I thought it over and gave my notice.
Then he starting traveling more, so I went with him. He went from a motel room, to an extended stay, to a Corp Apt. Which with so much free time it was, why not Full time?!?! So nearly 9 years ago, we bought the first of our 'full time' 5th wheels. He went back to his former employer and they have kept us traveling ever since.
Next year, I can take early SS. He's trying to work full time at least 4 more years, but we may scale back a little over the last 2. It all depends on how much we can save and how well the stock market treats our 401k and IRAs whether he continues to do a project or two a year after we're both collecting full SS.
