I retired nearly 10 years ago at age 49 with 27 years of service. I live in the DC area and there are good paying jobs here for folks like us. I had something to prove to myself, so I'm still working and have plans to retire in another 2-3 years.
I had an experience over Christmas that brought me back down to earth. We were enroute home from FL and overnighted at a CG in SC. While there, I ran into a guy who retired in 1984 as an E-7. He asked me a bit about myself and I told him. He looked at me kinda funny and said, "You're retired from the USMC. Why the hell are you still working?" He said he had worked a couple of jobs for a few years after he retired, but decided it wasn't worth it.
His words have echoed in my head ever since. Why AM I working? The best answer I have is I still have a mortgage I'm paying off and I'm trying see how much money I can bank. With each passing year, I see more and more people near my age die. I'm sure many of them also had plans to retire and enjoy life.
I can't tell you what is right for you. I certainly understand your question, though.
