A PPO policy is highly recommended for full-timers who travel the country. You never need prior authorization from a primary care provider or the insurance comapny. We've never had to pay for services or surgeries as we travel the country.
We have to check whether a provider is in BC/BS system if not we pay and only get reimbursed for what BC/BS has as reasonable charge.
I should say they pay then we pay anything over their normal negotiated
fee with BC/BS providers.
