But being able to read your mail online also means someone else on the other end is also reading it. I think I'd rather keep what privacy rights I still have.
Right......The employee who is tasked with scanning thousands of documents a shift, has all kinds of time to stop and ready YOUR mail. How does that tin foil hat fit? In reality, as a customer you have total control over what the service opens, or holds to ship to you.
I use St. Brendan's, and it's an extremely professional, and impressive operation. First, per my direction, they shred all but the first class material before they even waste my time scanning it. I have put a lot of effort into removing as much junk mail from my life as practical, but it still makes up at least half of the very small mail stream I have left. Next they ONLY scan UNOPENED envelope fronts, to allow YOU to decide how to proceed. You can then chose to shred, open and scan contents, hold or ship the specific envelope to you. (This would prevent them from reading all your classified, and triple top secret documents, as they could be forwarded to you, unopened.) I typically spend a minute or two, every few days, glancing at the scanned envelopes posted to my account. I then direct that roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of them be shredded. The remainder get opened and scanned. Of these, a VERY small portion get forwarded to me, every couple of months. This small list is things like tax documents, insurance cards, etc..... Their scanning is high quality, as a result, I typically download and/or print right off the posted scan, and then have the original shredded. In my experience, once I know what a document is, having the original in my hand really isn't critical. In most cases, I can usually print a copy, or find the same information on my online accounts, or a website, for example, vehicle registration renewals and insurance documents.
