Any Full Timers in Pennsylvania?

We are headed toward full-timing but we will be living in PA as my husband has a few more years to work until he can retire. Does anyone know where I can find specifics about domicile/residence in PA? We know the address we will use for our physical and we have a PO already I just want to read up more on the subject.

Any first-hand advice is also appreciated

  • Interesting. Three times in the last few years we have gotten jury notices, in PA, and simply sent a quick note that we will not be in the state for an extended period of time. All were easily excused. We are going to be transitioning back to snow birding next year, so I'm not too concerned about the long term plus and minuses, but I am amazed at how little tax burden PA. places on retirees. With the only hitch being, avoiding owning a home in one of the many totally crazy school tax areas of the state.
  • Soren, the 53 does raise a red flag. I was 57 and at that time health care wasn't an issue. And now being on Medicare it has become a non-issue. But I won't use a relative etc. for anything. Texas will send our tags anywhere or Fed-Ex them if we are close to running out for a coupe of extra bucks. Drivers license can be renewed online every other time and jury duty is taken care of. After serving on jury duty in Franklin County twice, being out of state, time and again wasn't going to fly. But I always tell folks who want to fulltime, you must do what works best for you where you set up a domicile.

Brrr...the winters are cold there for a RV. Good luck!

Yes they are! We only know we can do this because we had a fire in 2012 and lived in our RV for 11 months. It was an older RV than our new rig and The Hubs knows what all we'll need to do for freeze prevention. Biggest thing issue for me .....cold feet!! :-)

You will probably be stuck with the Keystone until he retires if you are spending much time in the G-burg area. State income tax, etc. We lived 50 plus years in Chambersburg and when I retired we went fulltime we severed all ties with PA. It is not fulltime friendly as taxes, tags, mail service etc.

We a currently full timers, early retirees, and PA. residents. I looked at "moving" to all the usual states. I found that as a 53 Y.O I'm pretty much screwed wherever I go, health care wise, but that South Dakota is a complete deal breaker. Vehicle registrations and insurance are cheap here, way cheaper that transferring everything to Florida. State taxes are nearly non-existent for us, since the vast majority of our income is in the form of pensions and SSD, which are not taxed by the state, or local governments. We keep our domicile address at our kid's house in the state and transfer our mail to ST. Brendan's Isle, mail service in FL. Bottom line for us? PA. is cheaper than I thought it would be, and a lot cheaper and easier than relocating to the "must do" full timer domicile states.
