My credit union debit card, they have, in the past, declined out of town purchases. They left voicemail at my house number, for me to approve a couple of transactions, and then it unfreezes the card. When I called the bank, they said my card number was flagged as possibly compromised, which automatically kicked in additional awareness. The possibly compromised was associated with one of the major retail stores being hacked. I was out of town, and they unfroze my card and suggested when I return, I get a new card, which I did.
I told them I was appreciative of the additional scrutiny and that I would rather put up with the minor inconvenience of a telephone call, to a number I know, and a bank I know, than have my debit card actually compromised and have to deal with that mess.
On another occasion, I got a call from one of my credit cards. They asked me if I had purchased a TV in California... Nope, Im still here in Ga. They said "I thought so, so we declined the purchase" and they said they will send me a new card in the mail.
So, yes, unfortunately, in todays world, we are left with some of these inconveniences due to the dishonesty of others.
I will never respond to a text about my debit or credit card, and unless the bank calls me from a number I recognize, I will not discuss my card situation if they call me. I will tell them I will call them back, at my branch number, and discuss with the branch.
I won't say you're stupid either, but I will say it would be smarter for you to call them, since you know who you will be talking to, vice them call you and "pretend" to be your bank.
