Diesel heating in a fifth wheel

As stated in my handle, my family and I are now full timers not by choice. We are also new 5'er owners. I am looking forward to the challenge.

Our house was destroyed by a wild fire in the beginning of May. Everything we own, including our house was completely reduced to ash.

Due to the logistics of insurance and insurance payouts, we are given a limited amount of money to live on during the rebuilding process. Unfortunately, because of the magnitude of destruction in a remote area, we are faced with undefined rebuild time line. Renting and real estate costs are extremely high in the area and having to still pay our mortgage while not having a house to live in could present a significant financial risk if any probable delays based on supply and demand schedules in construction occur. In short, renting is not really an option at this time nor is commuting as the closest town is 5 hours south.

With that said, I am looking forward to this challenge but recognize our inexperience and gaps in knowledge. Any and all recommendations are welcome.
The area is in a remote far North location in Alberta Canada.

We have bought a 2012 DRV Mobile Suites 43', 5 slides with bunkbeds in the rear.

Some of the winter prevention activities that I am currently planning are:

Skirting (essential for our area as temps get down to -35-40 c) with a space heater addition as well.
Water line and tank heat tracing.
Outdoor waterline heat tracing and insulation.
Insulated window coverings.

And my main question, I want to instal a supplemental diesel fired heating source such as an Espar M10 or M12. I am just not certain on how big of an installation job that this would be on a 43' 5'er. It would also be good to hear others experience with this type of heating source.

On a positive side note, the loss of our home due to a wild fire that completely levelled numerous neighbourhoods (4000 houses) and made international news, I am pretty sure that my ant problem has been rectified!

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Cheers
  • So sorry about your loss.

I just googled it for RVs and got quite a few hits. The Sprinter Class B's use it and here is a video from FMCA:

It sounds like it might be like the more popular Aqua Heat. That might work for you, too. Motorhomes use this type so you might want to post something in the Class A section or perhaps the moderator can move this post to Class A.

    -35 eh? Brrrrrrr!!
  • Thank you for your reply and condolences.

My family and I are just trying to take it one day at a time for now. The support that has been displayed since the evacuation has been amazing to say the least!

I was reading up on a few other forums and there seems to be a few people full timing using Espar Hydronic heating systems but I have only found limited info on out dated threads. Hopefully someone has some one has some experience with this type of heating as I would feel much more comfortable knowing that I had a secondary heat source, especially when the temps drop down to -35 or more.

On a related note, the first place that burned up was a full time camp ground where a few hundred people lived year around in 5'ers. Unfortunately they have all been dispersed since the fire.

And finally on a humorous note, I have save an absolute ton of money on laundry detergent! Not to mention my property tax is set for a massive decrease and my cable and electric bills are at all time lows! lol
Pretty sure my ant problem has also been rectified!
  • My heartfelt support goes out to you, I can't begin to imagine what you have been through. Your needs are outside the experience of most RV'ers, you might gain more meaningful input from a mobile home group. From what I read about the Espar line it is not really suitable to your application. Good luck.
