End game

My wife and I plan to fulltime in 1 1/2 years (I'll be 60). 25k pension, now working to get RV tech certification, retiring from 36-yr music teaching career, able to give lessons, start/direct community music groups for retrees/churches, etc.. So, I know we can earn decent income to supplement pension. We could sell everything today and not miss one brick. Q: What about our end game? Will we be ready financially to buy/rent that small condo when I can no longer drive? Will we spend every dime on medical insurance during our first 5 rv years? Or would we be able to save most of this modest pension if we work wherever we park it?

We do not care about things or gadgets so no concerns there. Just want someone who is farther along to give us their thoughts about post-fulltime plans/financial needs.
  • Hey Tubaronnie, have you thought about Camping World they have locations N,S,E,W and busy seasons differ. You may be able to transfer from location to location. Anyway if your not a big spender and health insurance doesn't suck too much of your pension up you should do just fine if you can keep fuel and site fees down. I bailed at 60 1/2 and we have been doing fine fulltiming by volunteering for state and Federal locations. We just keep the distances to manageable fuel usage. We are much happier doing this than sitting in the S&B.

Good luck, just run the numbers you'll be fine.

retire? I will never be able to retire in the traditional sense.
No, not on 25k. And it'll be awhile before SS.

And private medical insurance will be at least $400 a month just for you, but Obamacare may help you a bit on that.
  • Why would anyone quit a good job and then say they need to find a job so they have enough money to live. That doesn't sound like retirement.
  • Initially plan to stay here 9 months yearly. I work at RV place here during high season and can go full time those 9 months. Wife can work at local KOA to cover camp costs. Plan to spend school year here to give lessons. Travel to southern climes for other 3 months.
  • Never count on income from a job, that you don't have yet.
That's all the time, not just full time RVing.
  • Building a business of teaching music or rv repair would be really difficult while moving around. RV Parks usually have a list of rv tech's in the area that they recommend, don't think they would be willing to recommend someone that's just staying in their park. Just my opinion but I think if you need additional income you need to be more realistic. You may have to park in one spot for a couple of years, save $$$ then do some traveling. Yes, medical insurance can be really expensive. The little information I have read about the new health care exchanges give you a few options, like higher deductibles. That has been our option since we went fulltime at ages 48 & 56. We have been purchasing high deductible policies that run in 6 month increments from www.ehealthinsurance.com. If you pay the entire 6 months at time of purchase you get 20% off the premium, then we renew every 6 months. We purchase our medications from the Walmart or Target $4 list and make sure any prescription the Dr writes is a generic.
  • I think you may be overly optimistic about how much you can earn. Are you planning on taking social security at 62? Health insurance - will depend upon where you designate your residence - on Tuesday you should be able to look at see about what it will cost for individual policies under the ACA.
