We had Newmar do some work on a Class A that had a rear bath, 2008 4331 IIRC, sacrificed some of the rear area for bunks. It worked ok.
Class A's are designed for 2. You can get some that throw bunks in the middle area hallway, you can get them with some bunks in the rear, over the cab, but ultimately they are addons, they really don't feel designed as part of the coach.
We lived in our Newmar for 8 years before trading to a Fifth Wheel. I wouldn't buy a DRV again. I would buy the toy hauler we use now. The difference between living in a Class A and a fifth wheel is staggering. The amount of extra room you have inside is simply crazy when compared to the Class A. There are other trade offs but we really enjoy the fifth wheel now that we've gone that route.
Don't let anyone dissuade you from traveling with the kids. We have done it, and give absolutely zero $#@%! what anyone has to say about it. We got back into real estate for a bit and are about to go FT again now that we rode the FLorida recovery back to another peak.
Nothing like it, the time we get to spend with our daughter is priceless and we never will get back again.
Class A brands I'd consider?
Newmar
Tiffin
Winnie
Maybe, Jayco beyond that I'd really have to look hard at their respective owner forums.
Fifth wheels, Grand design and jayco are two nice upper middle market fifth wheels.
If you can buy used.
If you can't, due to floor plan restrictions, make sure you shoot for a minimum of 25% off MSRP including destination and all other BS charges.
