Full Timing with a Family

My husband and I are looking into full-time RV living and are pretty set on a 5th wheel. Does anyone know of any floor plans that offer bunks that are a center slide-out or located in the middle of the R somehow? We aren't happy with most of the layouts featuring a couch for 2 that just looks straight at the door. And most of the floor plans with bunks look that way. Seeing as we will be full-timing it, we want something that can be more comfortable to just "hang out" in the evenings. We have 2 kids so bunks would be a must. We have thought about converting the main bedroom's closet into bunks so that the living area is bigger. Any thoughts or suggestions? Has anyone done this with the closet?

  • We're in the midst of setting ourselves up for full-timing with our boys, 5 and 7 too!! I had the same complaint as you about the living room not having the room to LIVE in most 5th wheels. So, I found 2 that I fell in LOVE with. Here they are…

The Coachman Chaparral 360 IBL is amazing because it has a decent sized bunk room (double beds!) with the bathroom in between it and the master (privacy!). And a huge living area. You probably need a big old dually to pull it.

The other one I loved is the…Cedar Creek Silverback 37BH.

I adore the massive sofa and the fact that the bunk room is HUGE (with a half bath!) so the kids can spread out a bit. Some come with a sofa/table instead of the bottom bunk on that slide side (nice for doing road-schooling?).

Even with as much as I loved these 2 models (I toured the Silverback…it's spectacular!), we ended up purchasing a new-to-us Tiffin Allegro 35 QBA. :)

When do you think you'll be hitting the road? Hope to see you out there!!
  • Fortunately there are lots of options. They are expensive but DRV has some great floor plans and you can find similar from other manufacturers.

We love our Atlanta. Feels like a home.
  • Bayhill by Evergreen and some of the other brands offer units with bunks in the rear with their own half bath. Like the kids have their own room. If you can go to some RV shows and look at the different units. It seems they are making more floodplains for the family comfort

We are a fulltiming family with 2 boys, ages 5 and 9. We have the Heartland Gateway 3650 BH....bunkhouse is in the rear. We do plenty of snuggling in the living room at night watching TV. You can check out our blog at:

Love the interior of this unit. Kt has lots of room. Do the 2 couches make into a large lounger/bed?

The couch in the living room reclines out all the way...not into a bed, but I guess one could sleep there if need be. The couch in the bunkhouse does pull out into a bed. The dinette table makes a bed too. Instead of a couch in the bunkhouse, you could opt for another bunk bed.

What sold us on this unit is the full-size refrigerator, the bathtub/shower, king-size master bed, the pantry, and the bunkhouse. I knew it was going to be VERY important that my boys have their own separate space with a DOOR!

  • so all 4 of you will be sleeping in the one bedroom? doesn't sound like a good plan to me.
I believe I have seen Winnebago motorhomes that had a large closet in the slide off the aisle that had an option for bunk beds instead. don't know about 5ers however.
    bumpy
  • Keystone has a fifth wheel with bunk house and good living area
