I have been interested in full timing, or close to it for many years. Although my wife enjoys her time in the trailer she still likes the comfort and security of our home. For this summer I have volunteered at a local park as a campground host. It's close enough where she has been spending much of her ime there, but still can get to the house in less than an hour. For the winter I'd like to take an opportunity at a more remote park. She is not as interested. I'm wondering if there are couples here that follow somewhat separate lives when it comes to the RV?

Yes, me. And if we do travel, she has her own. Main reason is she's a hoarder.

The ranger we worked with in July has done mostly that for several years. Me, i told the wife that if she did not want to go with me I would go alone. Life has not been the same since.

IMHO, you need to have either a very strong marriage or a very weak marriage to make it work on a "full-time" basis.A very strong marriage because then you would have complete faith and trust in one another to keep doubts, threats, and misunderstandings from tearing you apart when you're separated.A very weak marriage because then you wouldn't care enough for those doubts, threats, and misunderstandings to tear you apart.It's the average marriage in between those extremes that would have the most difficult time. I would say if you have strong communication skills between you, you argue on a regular basis (which psychology shows is the healthiest marriage because it means you ARE communicating with each other and not avoiding tension and problems), and you are not joined at the hip (or in other words, overly dependent upon the other to manage your day to day life), then you could most likely handle it on a part-time basis - maybe a month at a remote park this winter, then come home, then go back out. i would keep your first year or two of "outings" to either easy locations for her to visit or for a shorter duration in one spot with a couple weeks inbetween for realigning your relationship.

We would never even consider it. For us, being united in marriage was and still is a full time commitment to each other. 43 years later nothing has changed that. ;)

I always thought it would be a good idea until recently I had to go and spend 7 days with my elderly parents. I sure missed my guy and couldn't wait to see him. We haven't spent much time apart in 32 years.

If you don't want opinions you should not ask. We have been married 43 years and do not like being apart but if it works for you then thats great. Go for it.

This is an interesting thread to me because my wife and I are heading in that direction. First I told her that I want to try moving to Florida in December now that the kids are grown. At first she didn't like the idea, but I told her that if we don't like it we can always come back to Texas. Now she's looking forward to making the change. And we've also talked about living in an RV after that. She is worried about that plan, too, but again I said that we could give it a try and if we don't like it we can always go back to apartment life. You only live once and I think we both really want to try something new, but she's just a little apprehensive. The difficulty would be if we give it a try and one of us likes it a lot and the other dislikes it a lot. Then we have to decide what is most important in our lives. But I don't borrow trouble, as my father used to say. We'll continue to take life one day at a time. So far it's been very good.

There is a married couple in my family who have always done this. Liking time apart is something they have in common:).

Sometimes they camp together, several times a year he goes alone for a week or two. She goes on multi week trips to visit friends.

They've only been together 30 years, but they started late.

Saying theirs is not a 'real' marriage is rude and childish.

I'm old school 65. Been happily married 42 yrs. I go south every year for the winter months and would like for the wife to go with me and have ask many many times. The answer is no. She will not leave the grand kids for 3 months. To be truthful when I hit RT95 and don't hear your going to fast, watch that truck, slow down, I'm kinda glad she is not with me. I love her to death and talk everyday. As far as trust there is no problem there, went to the MardiGras last year and had a blast. Had to ride my bicycle 2 1/2 miles from the campground. Seen one old guy in a clothes optional bar that looked like he had a shar-pei dog on his lap. I left that bar. With love and trust it can be done with no problem.

It would not work for my wife and I, we enjoy doing things together to much, and luckily we have similar interests.

My sister and her husband have been married for 35 years, and I don't think they have ever vacationed together. She goes to dog shows, and he goes to motorcycle, or kayak stuff. I don't understand how it works for them, but it does.

People are different, and marriages are different. It keeps the world interesting. I hope it works out for y'all, and maybe y'all can work out a compromise, of a month camping, and a month at home.

You know, your marriage, your rules and if you want to go off in the woods for months and your wife wants the comforts of home, go for it. My husband was in the military for 30 years and deployed often, transferred overseas often and sometimes we joined him and sometimes we didn't and our marriage was just fine.

If folks tell you that you shouldn't be married, that is a bunch of hooey, and don't listen to them as they are the ones who have the issues, not you. Enjoy your winter.
