It may be just me but in my experience a small gauge shotgun (4.10) is easier to handle than a handgun. I am not a gun hobbyist but just from both military and personal use a shotgun seems easier to handle, aim and shoot in the kind of situation you are talking about. Consider spending some time on a range with a knowledgeable person and see where your comfort zone is. The paperwork may be easier for a shotgun too but this is out of my scope of knowledge for your country. Sure is here though. :)
