We have a TT, didn't get a 5er. Most of the space in the bed of the truck is filled with the stuff that would be in the basement of a 5er. Makes using the truck for anything hard - have to unload a lot of stuff - and makes the truck fuel mileage bad without the trailer because the truck is loaded down.
We have a flat floor front to back - no danger of falling down stairs like has happened to several friends.
Our TT has opposing slides - as good a floor plan and as much space as any similar length 5er. Many TT floor plans are better and bigger than fifth wheel floor plans. 5ers no long have an advantage on floor plans.
I do dislike that the inside tops of the slides comes to about the middle of my forehead - in a fifth wheel the slides tend to be taller.
Our TT gets warm faster than a similar length fifth wheel due to a lower ceiling than a similar floor plan fifth wheel, and cooler.
Our TT is under 11 ft tall - we don't have to worry about overhead clearance as much as a 5er. We still have to be careful, but have more options.
Easier to fit a TT to newer trucks than a 5er. 18, 19 and 21 inch wheels on many new heavy pickups put the bed so high a fifth wheel will need the axles turned and possibly a frame extension before it tows level.
However, if I was to do it again - I would get a fifth wheel.
Met two couples who full-time for about 5 years each this fall while camp hosting.
One couple has a 40 ft DRV Suites 5er with washer and dryer installed. Very happy. Travel coast to coast every year.
The other couple has an 18 ft Casita TT and a mid-sized SUV. Very happy. Travel coast to coast every year.
Anything will work. Just will it work for you.
