PawPaw_n_Gram... well said (I didn't want to raise these thoughts myself, so glad you did). Except the wife and I have discussed 5er's many times and still opted for a TT for all the reasons you stated above. I use my truck for too much for other things than towing the TT. So bed space is important to keep open. And 5er hitches are heavy to lift out. You are absolutely right though about the floor plans between 5er's and TT's. Except for the "steps" looking at a flat floor plan, many of them are almost identical. I know my Outback is almost 100% identical to several 5er floor plans, except the steps.
The real advantage I see with the same identical floor plan (say mine for example), is the same trailer (same over all length of the actual trailer) will take a smaller foot print when hitched because 5-7 feet or more is over the bed of the truck. My overall length is 55 1/2 feet (TT), the same configuration of truck and 5er might be 48-50 feet long. This is the one advantage. But unhitched, the trailer length would be about the same.
