Just kinda wondering, since we plan to begin traveling a bit more in the future when retirement kicks in: Do any of you full timers hang on to a S&B home base even though you travel most of the time?

We're only just now in the process of transitioning to full-time, but are selling the house. We aren't in a position to afford full-timing AND the cost of maintaining a home with a mortgage. There are many good discussions on this topic over on RV-Dreams and Escapees. Check 'em out.

We sold our house, but kept our small vacation cottage in upstate NY. We've upgraded the cottage from summer to year round use, and added a full hookup RV site along side it. Most of the time when we stay at the cottage while visiting our kids that live nearby and catching up on doctor's appointments and such, we just continue to live in the coach. Our total annual cost for the cottage only amounts to a couple of thousand dollars, and it gives us the peace of mind of having a ready made "exit plan" when the time comes for that.

no house. Do the pros and cons. If it's just a place to keep your stuff and you can do it, get rid of the stuff. It's very liberating. We contacted the family and asked what they wanted. We gave them heirlooms and keepsakes. We sold the furniture, had a garage sale and donated things to charity. The rest we trashed. Didn't bother us at all. Time for someone else to dust the chotchkies! We don't have a mortgage, real estate taxes, insurance. Don't have to mow the lawn. Don't have to worry about break ins. No utility bills. We decided if and when we can't RV anymore, we will rent a small one bedroom apartment. Only you can make that decision.

In Illinois property taxes are extremely expensive. It just didn't make any sense to keep the house. We located a nice CG in our home area that would rent us the same site each summer. We returned to that site for three to four months every year so that we could visit kids/grandkids and take care of any doctor visits.We have recently purchased a home in SW Florida. The property taxes are about 1/5 of what our Illinois property taxes were. We will use this home for winter stays without the fiver.I think it just depends on your individual financial situation plus what area of the U.S. your home is located in will dictate annual expenses for keeping that home.
