There wouldn't be any "getting back", so boarding is out. I like the idea of letting them out on a harness (and hope they like it, too).
Have either of your cats bolted out the door? Do you need to do anything to keep them from doing so?
You'll have your hands full for sure. We always had to be very careful when opening the door. Usually my kids would hold the cats back until I was out. Once they figure that the camper is their home they will each find a spot and settle down....but you always need to be aware of open doors etc. We harness trained our cats at home before going away. Rusty, our old neutered tom, even gets to wear a life jacket when on the boat.
