Ideas for 3 cats?

As we contemplate the idea of how our lives would change being always on the road, one of the first issues I can't figure out how to solve is what to do with 3 cats who (a) don't like each other much, and (b) are used to being able to go outside during the day if they want to.

Can I get some ideas/experiences from those either with multiple cats, or younger ones used to being able to come and go as they please? I'm afraid one of them may slip out the door one day when we forget to be careful.

They'll be micro-chipped, but that only helps if they're found/caught.

Has anybody had success putting a harness on a cat to allow them to at least be outside?

Thanks,
Karen

There wouldn't be any "getting back", so boarding is out. I like the idea of letting them out on a harness (and hope they like it, too).

Have either of your cats bolted out the door? Do you need to do anything to keep them from doing so?
  • "... being always on the road" connotes full time and calls into question, the aspect of boarding. While I wouldn't go so far as contacting a taxidermist, I personally wouldn't allow pets to govern my entire life. There are several options available when you shuck it down to the cob. Either make the right decision or make the decision right.:)

I can see that personally but my daughter never would. She goes ape if I even say, 'There is more than one way to skin a cat.' :)

Boarding them does sound like practical advice I agree.

  • I think finding a home for your cats is the best alternative. They don't like each other so having the three of them confined to very small quarters will not be fair to the animals or humans. They are used to going outside when they want to. One or more WILL slip out of the door, just wanting to go out, and will then be scared in a strange environment, probably not to be seen again. If they slip out at a rest stop along the highway, then plan on having a flat cat. Not fair to the animal!
