Insuring contents

Hello! We are getting ready to move into an RV full time, while living in a local campground. DH is still working and my health issues/family keeps us local by choice. My question is how do you insure the contents of the rv without a home owners/renters policy? When I checked the insurance rate on an RV we are looking to purchase, our agent said you can't insure the contents of an RV. That it is covered in the 10% rider of your homeowners/renters policy.
  • We have full content and replacement cost for contents and our motorhome
thru GMAC Insurance. We are fulltimer's with address in SD
  • Thanks for all the great replies. I felt sure there were insurers out there, and she was just uninformed. When we actually get the new RV and ready to go, I'll talk to our personal agent and see what he can offer. We are with Farm Bureau, have been for years. If they can't offer us anything, we will check elsewhere.
  • When you get a full time insurance policy, do some calculations about how much it would cost to replace the entire contents of your RV and insure accordingly. You may be surprised how much insurance you actually need.
  • We use Blue Sky for Fulltimers. Includes all you would want - contents, liability, option for a storage facility, and more. We got quotes from Progressive and was similar, but stayed with Blue Sky as they specialize in full timer coverage.
    Try BlueSky
  • Full time or not Progressive Insurance will insure your contents based on a stated value. How good their rates are will be based on your insurability & what area your being covered in.

  • We use Poliseek (now known as AIS) out of Calif as our broker. We have had a couple of different insurance companies, but have settled with Progressive for our Full-timers Ins.

I just adjusted the contents UP a little as things seem to cost more these days.
  • When we FT'd we had a 'home owners' policy on our 5th wheel.
Covered contents, custom installed equipment, liability, motel/hotel costs if rig in for repairs etc.
Truck was also covered thru same company.

We had 2 claims...one minor and one major. Both were handled quickly, efficiently, with follow ups.....very please with the coverage/cost/customer service.

National Interstate Ins. They specialize in RV FT coverage

Get them thru a broker.we used Explorer RV......LINK
  • You will need a full timers policy. Not all companies offer them but National General(ex GMAC), Progressive and others do. In spite of what your not very knowledgeable agent said they do cover contents.
We had about $20,000 content coverage on ours. The standard mount offered was less but we paid extra to get more.
Some offer an umbrella liability policy may be something you want to check out.

The National General policy is what Good Sam is a broker for. In my case getting it from Good Sam instead of buying it from an agent saved us a couple of hundred dollars a year.
