It sounds like you and your son both have had it already with living at your parents' house. You want to escape your situation NOW. Why not get a one year rental - an apartment or rent a small house in the same area?
Here's the bad news - If a land rental isn't feasible financially, neither is living in an RV. (You mentioned the original plan was to live free without paying room & board to save money for a house or RV. Is that fair to your parents? Even if I had to live with them a while longer to save money, in your shoes, I'd want to contribute to their increased costs for housing me.)
Take a breather (without the pressures if being back at home at age 50) and spend a year researching and planning,which is part of the fun. What to buy, how to operate all kinds of RV systems, where to go. Rent an RV for a week's vacation and see what you learn. Get the groundwork done for your "on the road" career, and see if you'll be able to make the money part work. By then your son will be a year older and closer to his own adult decisions.
