I will jump in here as a retired teacher. One of the issues I am picking up here is that you are most worried about your son. I understand the home school thing so why not use that as a basis to get him involved and on board. What is he studying now? Civil War? Let him help you plan a tour of the more famous battle sites and museums. Colonial times? Jamestown, Plymouth, Boston, Philadelphia, Williamsburg are fabulous sources. The Smithsonian in Washington D.C. can easily augment almost any subject and would take days if not months to absorb all that is there and mostly for free. My point is, you will have him for another couple of years at most. Let him be "in charge" of the destinations and the time frame for each. This might help get him more invested in the adventure and I, personally, see it as a huge asset in his studies. Someone already mentioned to focus on his career choice, and I could be okay with that except I think he would be most unusual to have any kind of a clear idea of a career choice at this time. He might be thinking Astronaut, Go to the NASA complex in Houston, maybe he is leaning toward computers ... Silicon Valley/Seattle, Finance, Wall Street ... the possibilities are endless and researching it all together is half the fun.
YUP, X2 on this one.
