Missing Social Security Funds

I visited my local SS office to ask questions and was told by the SS rep not to set up an online account to access my SS info. If you have online access to your SS account then your account may be hacked. 1000’s of accounts per week are being hacked into from India and China. If you receive a direct deposit then the hackers change your bank info to theirs and your funds are deposited into their account. If you receive your funds by mail then they change your mailing address to theirs. According to the SS rep only those that have an online account set up are being hacked. The office I visited was in a small town and I was told 3-5 accounts per week in that area were being hacked into. If you don’t get your SS funds on time call your SS office. The SS rep recommended closing your online account to prevent hacking.
  • Hey "Texan", take it from another Texan, it is possible and we lost a months check this way.

    What happened.

    1) Had both my wife's and my account set up for direct deposit to our bank account.
    2) Someone got into wife's account, changed address (to bogus address in Austin, Tx), email (to bogus gmail account using address on multiple other SSN accounts at same time), and bank account (from Bank of America to H&R Block bank) information.
    3) Normal day check was to be deposited it went to new account from which it was immediately withdrawn using debit card.
    4) We checked next day and were told that she had changed all her information and money went to H&R Block bank.
    5) We rushed to SS office and changed our accounts so there can be no on-line changes to account.
    6) All this happened in May. Still have not got her check and don't expect to ever get it as SS is expecting H&R Block to give the money back and they are stonewalling.

This has not been a fun experience. Remember, that your SS account CAN be hacked and your check sent to a different bank. Only way to stop this ability is to go to SS office and specifically change account so that all account changes must be made in person.

Now once you do this, never move or become disabled as the only way this information can be changed is by you showing up in person. This will be fun when you are too old and disabled for RV'ing.
  • I really question this info. The way it is set up, they can NOT access your funds, without your knowledge. IF there is a change made on line, you are immediately notified by mail and no change is authorized for 60+ days, to give you a chance to correct any fraud.....NO, the person was wrong, in what he told you.
  • Kind of question this info???? If they (the hackers) are really able to hack into the S.S. system why hasn't the Govmt done something to prevent there access to a govmt web site??? Could be that the workers are just trying to protect their own jobs with so many people getting feed up with waiting for hours at the local S.S. office to do any kind of business. My self I spent 1 hr waiting at my local office and they had seen only 3 people and there still 10 more in front of me. I went on line and register for S.S. in 15 minutes.
