Master Certified is good on the resume BUT doesn't mean squat IF you have no 'skill'........being a mechanic is good background BUT how are you will electric/electronics/120V AC/12V DC?
Can you troubleshoot/evaluate OR just a R/R parts person?
How well do you interact with 'John Q Public'.......and are you HONEST?
Remember It's YOUR NAME.....so be a man of your word.
Good luck!
You are correct with all of the above for sure. I'm very good on 12v right now. Good with some household and industrial, 120vac and somewhat higher voltages. I work on heavy equipment, so I have encountered some 24v systems as well. I do all the home repairs around my home now, and have done some for family as well. I do have a thick skin, and I have dealt with John Q. as well. Not as much as I will be when I start this business, I'm sure. I am looking forward to meeting new people and seeing places I've never seen or experienced with my family too.
Having been an RVIA master certified RV Tech and ASE Master HD Truck Tech
I can tell you, (at least when I took the test) part of the RVIA test was hands on, and your diagnostic ability was part of the test. You HAD to follow a logical course. I found the RVIA test much harder than the ASE test.
Now in regard to the future mobile tech. I would probably "make friends" with local dealer(s). Why? Most dealers don't want to do mobile service, so if they are smart (as my former employer was) they realize you are not a threat because you are mobile and therefore limited to what you can or want to do. They can be a good source of customers, they frequently have customers who for whatever reason don't want to (or can't) bring their unit back- so you get sent. This allows you to get your name out there, and also might provide a discount source for parts.
Remember- A happy customer tells 2 others about you, an unhappy customer tells 20 about you.
That is some great advice! Thanks. I will definitely do that.
