Need firm mattress

Ready to replace my OEM mattress in our 5er. We have a Temprupedic king at home, it's one step down from their most firm mattress. Love it and wanting to get something similar but really don't want to spend 2-3 Thousand. Any suggestions. Kinda hard to test them out when buying online. Don't want an air mattress. Want to stay with foam or gel, etc.
  • We just went to a discount mattress store and tried them all out in their show room, then paid an extra $35 for the short queen cut. They delivered and took the old one away. Spend around $400.
  • My wife had a Tempurpedic twin that we loved the feel of, also. This winter while out in California, we found an outlet for an individual mattress maker and bought a cool gel/memory/standard foam (layered) mattress in the firmness we wanted. We paid $525 delivered (standard queen size in our rig) and we're very happy with it. Costco also carries several memory foam mattresses for good prices. Our son bought one and is very happy with it.
  • We went with a mattress from Bed-in-a-box. Very firm Gel memory foam bed. RV queen was $599 on sale. I see they are more now..Here Love it. We use a very firm Stearns & Foster at home.

I've had good luck with 9-10" latex foam on a plywood base. I would suggest something like this.
  • We continue to love our Sleep Number mattress. The standard queen worked fine in our rig and we sleep great.
  • We had a Tempurpedic for years and I LOVED it! We had it for 8-9 years and when we camped, the mattress in our TT was awful. I was on Walmart's website and saw their Gel Memory Foam mattress was on sale for $180 and figured I couldn't go wrong at that price. Ordered it and had it shipped to the campground. It arrived in a box 2 days later. We unfurled it and I slept like a baby that night.

About a year later, our Tempurpedic started getting "lumpy" and needed to be replaced. I ordered the California King size of the Gel mattress and it has been extraordinary.

When we sold our TT, the mattress went with it, but the day we purchased our fifth wheel, I ordered another mattress from Walmart. It was here at the house awaiting the delivery of the 5'er.

This is the one we have and it is as comfortable or maybe more comfortable than our Temperpedic because it doesn't get hot...ours did.

  • www.foambymail.com - they sell all types (firmness) of foam by the sheet. Will custom cut it, but that costs as much as the sheet of foam! Easy to cut using an electric knife (yup, like for roast beast...) - follow their directions. We used a 5" thick piece of their "lux" (firm) foam, with an 1-1/2" memory foam topper from Walmart.com - worked great! Hope this helps! ST
