Jim, you're paying for it with tax dollars already as over 50% of the federal jail population is there for drug offenses. It's probably just as high or higher percentage in state and local jails.
If you look at the costs of incarceration, it just isn't cost effective to continue to do things the way we are. And what we are doing isn't working to reduce the number of addicts and related societal costs.
I too don't think making it legal is the answer, but decriminalizing (not talking about pushers and dealers) and paying for treatment is probably cheaper than incarcerating.
The reason this is related to the original topic is that in an effort to attack the drug problem the recent push has put an undue burden on those who actually need these medications.
