Because the OP has already contacted them acknowledging that the notice was received.
I agree with calling or sending a letter. Indicate when you will be back in the area - they are more likely to give you a postponement IF you give them a date when you will be available. Just a generic "I'm out of the area" is unlikely to be successful.
