Noodling last night; NC has a 3% sales tax on MHs while Fl has 6%. Super Cs are pricey so this becomes pretty significant. And if you "move" to Fl and can evidence you've had your RV for 6 mos, you don't have to pay sales tax again. So, it might make sense to buy the RV 6 mos before changing residency. More noodling to come but if any full timers have gone through this process it would be helpful to share. Shame this forum has become a ghost town.
Yup, sounds like timing can be on your side here with your knowledge of each states fees and timelines.
Whether you get a partial year PP assessment from NC when you transfer it out of state, idk. But sounds like less $ out of pocket than the alternative.
And remember, being informed and using the law to your advantage isn’t wrong.
You seem like an honest person to whom this may feel sketchy. But it isn’t. Again, think globally. What if the sequence of events you’re planning in detail just “happened”? You would legally be entitled to how it works out. Just like you would legally be responsible for if you didn’t meet those timelines and got hit double.
Play the system for all it’s worth plus a little because the system will do the same to you.
I’ve got many more examples because I rarely make ANY uncalculated moves with large amounts of money (although my investment skills are a solid C-, lol).
Latest being I will get the shaft on capital gains like I explained below. My only mental recourse is that I took full advantage of other tax related things for years in the past and the scorecard is still approximately Grit 3 - IRS 1. Hahaha
PS, my 19y/o son in MT is likely about to become the proud “owner” of my next vehicle! I need a new or newer truck soon. He will “own” it for at least 90days (unless I move to MT but it’s looking more like Spokane with 8.6% sales tax vs 0.0% in MT). If I go used private party and can use the WA brother in law deal I will. If not or if new, it will be his in MT for at least 91 days at which time I can legitimately use the family sale no tax clause to get it in my name in WA.
The difference is $3-6k in my pocket or in Turd Fergusons pocket!
