We have a lakeside cottage in the Adirondacks that's been in the family for many years that we wanted to keep as our "hang up the RV keys" location near our two daughters when the time comes. In the mean time, we have a full hookup site there for the motorhome when we're there, and usually only bother to move into the cottage while we're doing maintenance or modifications on the coach that are easier done without us living in it at the same time. Over the years, we've remodeled the cottage from it's original "summer cottage" status to year round livable, so it'll be ready for us when needed. Our costs to maintain the cottage including utilities and taxes only come to a couple of thousand dollars a year, much less than what a year round RV park site would cost in most places. By maintaining our domicile at the cottage and being both old folks and a veteran, we get some significant property and school tax breaks as well.
