Turn the knob to either low ac or high ac your choice. Turn the temperature knob about half way of its travel. Turn to to colder if you are then hot or warmer if you are then cold. The fan will run constantly, but the compressor (the thing that makes cold air) will turn off and on to maintain whatever temperature you set with that temperature knob. It will not hurt it one bit to run all the time. Actually, running the unit is better than not running it!
