Our ac is a ceiling mount with dials but it still has a thermostat if only a numbering system from low to high. It also has adjustable fins.
Please don't be offended but are you sure you are understanding how your unit works?
As for the mattress you have my sympathy. What about a featherbed topper? I'm thinking it could be adjusted to fill the slope?
