Depending on where your kids are in AL and their ages, you might consider getting a RV already situated in a park or on a lot somewhere.. lots of lake side RV parks and locations. Almost everytime I look at CraigsList, I see something in Eufaula area. If you do that, you can drive an economical car to pick up kids and go to RV, and if you want to go somewhere else, you may still have money left to do that.
