For those of you choosing a domicile based solely or mainly on the state tax rates, Kiplinger released a list of states and their 'tax friendliness' to retirees. Thanks for posting the site. We are Illinois residents and full timers (sold sticknbrick). However we recently bought a lot in SW Florida and are preparing to put a residence on it.No income tax on retirement income in Illinois, plus our registration fees are pretty cheap. This site should allow us to make some other comparisons with Florida now.

Sites such as those really aren't a lot of use for fulltimers - since we don't worry about property taxes, etc. In fact the reason that FL, SD, TX are the favorites among fulltimers is because they have no state income tax.Barb

There are other states that have no income tax and several more that have no income tax or very little income tax for retirees. However, they do not accept or make it difficult to use a mail forwarding address as a legal address for obtaining a driver's license, vehicle registration, voter registration, etc. Other than UPS stores, they may not even have a mail forwarding service like those in FL, SD, and TX. Some individuals may also have other legal considerations such as inheritance, common law marriage, etc. that they need to consider in choosing a domicile. A lot of fultimers do own property and those that do that claim to domicile in a different state have to be aware of the laws regarding how long they can stay on their property without the state considering that their domicile/residence.

trailertraveler,I agree with all of the factors you listed, but the thread specifically deals with 'tax friendly states and for fulltimers, I think you would agree that the ones that are tax-friendly and fulltime rver-friendly are FL, SD, & Tx. Barb
