Tell Me I am Crazy... Or Not...

OK so my name is Steve. I just joined up here. My wife has an idea. She told me about it a couple of weeks ago. Now I cant stop thinking about it.
I have 10 years until retirement. I have a full time job. I own a nice large house with a larger payment. I have all the bills to go with it Including Major summer ac electric bills. ($500 to $650 in the summer)
My Daughters have both moved out so Mom and I are all alone in this house.
With the way business is it is getting harder and harder to make the house payment and handle the bills. This wife has not worked for 25 years and the best she has found is a 15 hour a week job paying very little.
So in a nut shell, I want out of the house and the major bills, I don't need this big place anymore. I have some equity built up and if sold would fix me up nicely. My retirement savings is a joke. I feel the clock ticking if you know what I mean.

So the wife's idea? She was offered a position as a volunteer for a county RV park. She would have to work 30 hours a week and in return we get a covered large Rv spot, free full hookups. Laundry. All but phone and internet. (Free internet in the restaurant.)
What I want to do is sell the house, Buy a nice 5th wheel (Looking at a Montana)And give it a go.

We have camped for years in a 30 foot toy hauler but not full time and love it. I know this would be a lot different but honestly think it could work. I would continue at my job for the 8 to 10 years until retirement. All I think about is how much I could pack away for retirement. Then who knows, travel or buy a little house when the time is done.

So am I crazy?..... Or not?
  • All of the above thoughts plus - if she works at the park and you at your job, will you two have the same days off?
  • I am assuming from the 89131 location, you are in Las Vegas. Full time in a RV is not for everyone, and you have to take a very hard look at yourself, your spouse, and your relationship. Then you have to consider the weather extremes. On the surface, it does seem like a cheap way to live. But there is a high price to pay in the terms of convenience, comfort, space, and relationships.
  • Is this a year round position?
Where is it located. Not exact but like Northeast, Southwest etc. Concern is winter as in water and freezing.
  • I was on the fence on what to reply until you said you have camped for years. So you know what you are getting into. You would be surprised by how liberating it can be to get rid of "stuff" and simplify your living arrangement. On the other hand, some guys cannot make it without their own garage type space to putter around in.

Knowing that your wife is on board is a big plus too. Do you think you are going to be able to stand being in an RV in the summer heat? You mentioned 500 - 600 bills for AC in the house. Its going to get hot in an RV.
