@ jmtandem - A very valid point. I actually do put away a few hundred dollars each month in anticipation of replacing my current van at some point in the future. However, my vehicles do not depreciate anymore as they are already "old and tired". The van I am in now is a 1989 Dodge purchased for $3400 in 2010 (4 years and counting for that price). Parts are extremely cheap an it is easy to fix myself, even on the road. Obviously I do have to tools and the means to do my own repairs, others may not.
When it does have a critical failure, I will pickup another similar van with my saved up cash. I do not use credit or debt to buy anything in my life. Everything is paid for out of my own funds or it is not purchased at all. Simple yet effective.
Obviously you have thought through many of the attributes of living full time in a van or RV. We so often read about many that jump into the full timing life and have no clue how they will replace the RV some day assuming they full time that long. Granted, many diesel pushers will last longer than most will full time but still it is a cost to be considered. Even at the end of full timing someday they will want to purchase another house and that money should be in the bank, or at least enough for the down payment on the stick and brick.
Again, thanks for sharing that information. As far as any discussion on what you get from tax supported facilities, that is almost irrevelant to your discussion as those are there whether somebody uses them or not. The more we use tax supported facilities the more the government will have the demand and need to support them. So.....you are doing good for all of us by using the tax supported things and facilities. I have little sympathy for those that think using tax supported facilities in the way you have is somehow cheating the system, unfair, illegal, or not paying your fair share.
