Our home base is TriCities, Washington. And talking with our adult daughter today and she thinks we should settle down and get an apartment or go into a "senior apartment" .. we are fine, no medical issues of significance .. do not need 'assistance care' .. and are and have been volunteering these past years ... now we are in our 70s.I know this has been talked of before (searched, but couldn't find right combo of words to pull up thread) .. and was wondering if others are having this same type of discussions with their adult children (in their 40s & 50s).We have more traveling we want to do - Virginia trip possibly next year before looking for an apartment or a larger RV to retire in at an RV Park .. If you have had this type of "discussions" with your grown children - how did you 'deal' with it ?

I guess I'm lucky - at 68, my kids think my traveling is great - their jealous that they still have to work for a living!

Maybe what she's really worried about is whether you've got a plan at all for a day that must come eventually.Do you?

In no uncertain terms tell them: We'll let you know when we're ready to "settle down".

Mom just moved into an assisted living complex. She traveled a lot and the transition to needing more and more assistance made her stop. If you are living good independently then by all means keep doing it. When people are helping you with more and more of the basic things then reconsider.

My kids never had a problem with us leaving. I respect them enough so that if they thought we were not capable of being on the road anymore, I would take it under advisement.

However...I do not know you or your children. Are you a free babysitter or offer other services they may resent loosing? Take into account some of the more obscure reasons they may be giving you a hard time.

My parents quit fulltiming in their Alpenlite when driving from WA to GA to see us, my father had a stroke in Elko, NV. When he was well enough to travel, my BIL & DS drove down from the Coast and drove them back. They still lived in the 5er in my sister's front yard for awhile.

But then Dad's eyesite went because of his diabetes, they sold the S-10 & 5er and moved into my sister's house and my Mom did all the driving after that.

I would do what is best for me. It is your Decision. I would tell my Daughter that I appreciate her Concern, but that Y'all are Fine, and that she should concentrate on her own Life and not worry about what you do. She sounds like a Worrier. I had a Wife that was like that, I talked to her about it many Times for all the Good it did, She wound up literally worrying herself to death! she died at age 53.

I do not always understand the need to post questions like this. I tell my kids it is none of there business and to go away. I also tell them, nothing personnel. You are adults - so act like it. And tell them you are leaving everything to charity or to something else but not to them. Pay attention to the Doctors and seek their advise.

Lie to the kids. Pick you start date, but tell the kids a date 2 months into the future. As the date approachs for you to leave the kids will amp up the emotional ties to them - to get you to stay. Leave on a day that catches them off guard then do a mea cupla two weeks later.

Love reading the responses. We both turn 70 in July and plan to start our fulltime adventure around that time. Kids and siblings are supportive.

My oldest daughter tried that with us about getting off the farm. We have a small 14 acre farm and recently she commented that we needed to sell it and move back into town. She said this farm was too much for us. At 53 I'll admit I'm a little slower than I was at 23 but I can still outwork most 23 year olds. This place is a lot of work for just the two of us but personally, she'll have to drag me off this farm kicking and screaming.

I feel the same about my RV'ing.

Our kids are beginning to worry about us also and we haven't even hit the road yet! I would think them for caring about you, but let them know that you don't believe that you are ready to give it up just yet. Tell them that if either of you begin to believe that there is an issue with driving and handling the RV safely, you will quit. Odds are that the spouse who is not driving will make the decision when they no longer are comfortable with the driver.

Most families don't know how to approach a senior family member about not driving anymore, until it is well after they should have.

Everyone thinks they drive fine, but if it has gotten to the point that your kids are saying something, maybe you should really think about it.

Most times that I've had friends in this type of situation it was NOT about money!! It was the thought of grandparents getting killed in a vehicle accident, or causing an accident and not even knowing it.

Just think about it, and don't get angry at your kids.
