We full-time in a fifth wheel, but here are my observations having owned a travel trailer and knowing some folks who full-time in travel trailers:
- Given equal living space lengths, travel trailers make for longer rigs. They don't have part of the trailer overhanging the truck and have the A-frame length added to the front.
- Travel trailers have less storage space than a fifth wheel with the same floor plan. They don't have the large "basement."
- Fifth wheels are more stable towing in high winds.
- Travel trailers take more time - and usually more physical effort - to hitch and unhitch.
- The main advantage I see to travel trailers is not having the stairs going up to the front area, be it the bedroom or front living room. As we age, that would be nice.
- We've not had any problems fitting a 36' fifth wheel into most parks or campgrounds we've stayed in. I'm not sure I could have said the same for a 36' travel trailer because of the length of the rig while backing and the fact that you can get a fifth wheel at a more acute angle to the truck (assuming a sliding hitch or long bed truck).
Just some thoughts...
