Travel with guns

When you are a full timer what issues are there with having a gun for protection? Restrictions when crossing state lines? Thank you.

  • Firearms laws very from state to state as someone said. And sometimes those laws are not clear or easy to understand.

Let me say I am not a lawyer or giving legal advice (wrote disclaimer :) )

But there are some websites that may help you in deciding where you can and cannot have your firearm. Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of them. Handgunlaw.us is another. You can also check into getting "out of State Carry Permits" for states you may want to have your firearm in.

As a side note, too often these threads are shut down so I hope it stays polite.
  • OH my! Gun laws vary so much state to state and even city to city. To compound the problem, case law confuses and merges a persons home (the RV) with a motor vehicle which different rules sometimes apply.

Before you embark on carrying a gun in your RV, you should do your own due diligence and research the matter yourself to your satisfaction. Relying on any internet forum for information where a mistake could land you in jail with your motor vehicle confiscated is just not wise.
  • Just keep it unloaded and packed away when driving and no issues in the US as far as I know... Once you are parked, you can keep it however you wish inside your RV, just as you can in your home.

If you have a carry concealed weapons permit, you might be allowed to travel with it loaded in some states, but you'd have to check that out for each state.

I live in WA state and have a CCW and I take my gun with me on camping trips, but it's unloaded and packed away while driving.

Legally, I can drive with it loaded in the vehicle, but I don't need to do that.. I can also carry it on my person, loaded, concealed if I choose to..

In WA, it's also an "open carry" state, so you can pack it on your hip if you so desire too... As long as you are legally allowed to own a hand gun, you can do this..

Of course there are rules and regs governing 'where' you can do this and there are places that even with a CCW you can't take your weapon on the premises, but in general public places and in State and National Parks in WA state, you can... :)

When camped, I keep my weapon 'close by' when we are in the RV and secured when we aren't.

You will have to do your own research on what's applicable to where you wish to go, as all states have their own rules and even agreements on where CCW permits are accountable or not.. I think I'm good in most of the NW states, but I have no idea on if my CCW is good on the East Coast for example... But, I'm not planning any trips out there soon, so I don't really care... ;)

  • You definitely don't want to go into Canada or Mexico with any weapons. For the states, you need to know what the laws ares in each state. NE states (expecially NY, NJ are strict as well as IL and Washington DC. I had a cop suggest to me that if you're ever going to have one in a vehcile, you need to have a Concealed Weapons Permit, period.
  • Gun laws vary from state to state. Many recognize other state's concealed carry permit, some do not. There is a book available listing the latest gun laws in each state.
If you are full timing and want to carry, I suggest buying it.

Doing a search will yield nothing...It's a GUN thread and they inevitably get nasty and are deleted.

  • Although its not always clear, my opinion is if you don't know the laws, you shouldn't have a gun. Ok guys I got my flameproof suit on.
